Peru: Red pepper and jalapeño to US
According to information given by Jorge Chepote, president for Capsicums Committee of ADEX, Peruvian exports of chilli are growing and a positive tendency is being appreciated for the next coming years. Although, the specialist assured that, with the export of red pepper and jalapeño to the United States, they would grow even more.
"Presently, the total of exports of red pepper and jalapeño are canned and it's expected that in less than 36 months it will be possible to have positive results from the North-American government, so they can be exported fresh".
In that sense, ADEX created a working team called "TOP FRESH", to achieve the US demands regarding capsicums, specially red pepper and jalapeño, he affirmed.
"The objective of the talks is to offer our product to the United States, fractioning the market in seasons, offering them in the months when the other exporting countries can't fulfil the demand, due to the season of the harvesting, highlighting the competitiveness regarding the product's quality against the others", Chepote sustained.
Exports would be incremented more than 100%, representing some US$ 50 million on average, even if the European market is interesting, the demand is not so strong as in North-American due to the Latin emigrants that are the natural big consumers of this product, he asserted.
Finally, Jorge Chepote pointed out that they must be patient so this resolution can be effective, counting on: "the commercial approval for fresh citrus took 9 years; avocado took 7 and we wait for a positive answer in less than 36 months for the capsicums, by APHIS".
